What is the Windows Installer?
The Windows Installer does what the name suggests and more. As well as helping install software, the formerly named Microsoft Installer is also a software management system. It monitors the adding and removing of program components and helps with recovery through the use of rollbacks.
It is not unusual for programs that are installed to be in conflict with others that are already present on your PC. For example, an installing program could try to overwrite a Dynamic Link Library file that other programs share. The Windows Installer attempts to prevent these situations.
As well, programs can ask the Installer to ensure all of the right files have been installed. The Windows Installer can even fix problems such as these by copying files to replace those that are missing or corrupt.
The Windows Installer service is broken into two basic parts that operate in concert with each other: the Microsoft Software Installation (MSI package file) and the client side installer service (Msiexec.exe). The MSI package is used when a program is installed. They help the Installer put all the files and registry keys in the appropriate places.
The Msiexec.exe uses the MSI.dll to read the .MSI files and then to do any other operations that are needed. At times, “Transform files” (.MST) are needed for language translation or any other such “dynamic” changes at installation.
Periodically, Microsoft will update the Windows Installer. You can log onto the Microsoft website to make sure that you have the latest version.
